Vic: New penicillin found in wallaby milk
An ingredient in wallaby milk .. that protects joeys from infection .. could one day
be used to kill antibiotic-resistant hospital superbugs.
Australian scientists have found a compound in the milk .. that's tested 100 times
more effective than penicillin at killing a wide variety of fungi and bacteria .. including
golden staph.
Research team leader BEN COCKS says the compound .. dubbed AGG01 .. could have a profound
impact on human health.
Dr COCKS says the compound's special because it doesn't just stop the bacteria growing
.. it actually kills them .. and quickly.
He says it's too early to know if the compound will be as revolutionary to medicine
as penicillin .. because it hasn't yet been tested on animals or humans.
And Dr COCKS says it'll take more than six years of further testing before it's likely
to be available.
