NSW: Ngo agrees to a history of political clashes with Newman
SYDNEY, Feb 17 AAP - Phuong Ngo has agreed he had a history of political clashes with
the NSW MP he was convicted of murdering in 1994.
On Tuesday, the former Fairfield City councillor was taken through numerous newspaper
articles and other documents, which included strong criticism of him by NSW MP John Newman.
"We have had disagreements, differences, on many occasions on political issues," Ngo
told the Sydney judicial inquiry into his conviction.
Ngo is serving a life term after being convicted in 2001 of ordering the assassination
of Mr Newman, who was gunned down outside his Sydney home in 1994.
Ngo said he first met him in 1987, when Mr Newman was handing out how-to-vote leaflets
supporting ALP candidates at the council elections where Ngo was standing as an independent.
Donna Woodburne SC, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, took Ngo through numerous
documents, including a letter sent by the councillor's solicitors threatening legal action
against Mr Newman over the circulation of a forged open letter, purportedly from the Vietnamese
community.
Mr Ngo agreed he believed the letter was defamatory of him, and included claims that
he protected organised gangs and had abandoned the needs of local Vietnamese residents.
Other media reports included Mr Newman complaining about Mr Ngo's involvement in the
building of a Chinese arch gate in Cabramatta and the building of the Mekong Club in the
area.
The hearing is continuing.

IAB Opens New Online Advertising Community Center
Type: News
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced that it marked the opening of its new online advertising community center, the IAB Ad Lab, by hosting the first of several national privacy roundtables organized by U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
According to a release, the roundtable series, which is focused on discussing the interactive advertising industry's self- regulatory efforts to protect consumer privacy, was attended by Representative Blackburn, IAB leadership and 15 of its member companies and partner trade associations.
Designed as a new community hub for the entire marketing-media ecosystem, the IAB Ad Lab, located directly above the IAB's 7th floor headquarters at 116 East 27th Street in New York City, is a venue where thought leaders can address some of the industry's most pressing needs and exciting opportunities, from creating new ad formats, to building brands online, to anticipating the future of mobile advertising.
"The IAB Ad Lab is the physical embodiment of the IAB, where the digital world comes together live and in real time for innovation, collaboration, and learning," said Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB. "We're honored that the IAB Ad Lab was selected by Representative Blackburn to host this key public policy discussion and we applaud her leadership. This is the first of many groundbreaking events we plan for our new center, where we hope to see marketing and media leaders come together to network and help power the continued growth of the digital advertising and media industry."
The IAB noted that the IAB Ad Lab features a modular space that can accommodate presentation-style gatherings for as few as five and as many as 74 participants. In addition to thought leadership conversations and presentations by industry leaders on topics of interest to marketers, agencies, publishers, technology companies and service providers, the IAB Ad Lab will host IAB board and committee meetings, product demos, press and award events, networking receptions, and meet-ups. The Ad Lab will also be open to members and other companies in the marketing-media ecosystem for meetings and sponsored events.
"Representative Blackburn's decision to launch her privacy roundtable series at the IAB Ad Lab further cements our leadership position on the privacy policy front," said Mike Zaneis, Senior VP, Public Policy and General Counsel, IAB. "The Ad Lab was created precisely to facilitate conversations about what the interactive advertising industry is doing, where the industry is going and what we're doing to maximize the experience for both the provider and the consumer."
"Data driven advertising is the lifeblood of our most dynamic economic sector. It is also the crux of growing consumer privacy concerns," said Blackburn. "I am grateful to IAB for hosting a session where we began to explore this vital issue. The Ad Lab is an excellent space from which IAB can highlight the work advertisers are doing to keep the Internet free, promote economic expansion, and protect the consumer."
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is comprised of more than 500 media and technology companies who are responsible for selling 86 percent of online advertising in the United States. On behalf of its members, the IAB is dedicated to the growth of the interactive advertising marketplace, of interactive's share of total marketing spend, and of its members' share of total marketing spend. The IAB educates marketers, agencies, media companies and the wider business community about the value of interactive advertising. Working with its member companies, the IAB evaluates and recommends standards and practices and fields critical research on interactive advertising.

WA:Thousands of homes without power in storm
Thousands of home are without power as storms affect the electricity network in the
Perth metropolitan area and the south-west of Western Australia.
Western Power says more than 12 thousand homes have had power interruptions, as lightning
strikes caused some of the network's safety devices to trip and a small number of power
lines to be brought down.
Lightning has caused a bushfire in Quairading and nearly five thousand homes in Forrestfield
lost power when lightning brought down power lines at the railway freight yard.
And about 15 hundred properties are without power in a wide-ranging area from Jurien
Bay toward Bunbury.

QLD:Street too quiet for Rudd's sign: Bligh
BRISBANE, Aug 4 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says she would display former prime
minister Kevin Rudd's election campaign sign outside her Brisbane home - if her street
was busier.
Ms Bligh, who lives in Mr Rudd's Griffith electorate, played down suggestions from
the opposition in parliament on Wednesday that she had made a personal decision not to
display his sign outside her home.
Ms Bligh, who is now national president of the Labor Party, told parliament that she
had advised Mr Rudd's office that she'd be happy to have a sign in her front yard.
"My understanding of the local government rules in relation to the display of signs
in the city of Brisbane, is that you're allowed 500 electoral signs within the electoral
boundary," she said.
"Therefore the campaign team will pick the best sites for those 500.
"I happen to live on a very quiet road, but if he wants to put a sign there, I'd be
happy to have it."
Mr Rudd was released from hospital on Monday evening following surgery to remove his
gall bladder on Friday.
There has been intense speculation about Mr Rudd in the federal election campaign,
as damaging leaks from cabinet threatened to derail Prime Minister Julia Gillard's bid
to retain office.
Some have accused Mr Rudd of being the leaker, but he has denied being the source.

Vic: Copycat suicides feared if 60 Minutes show screened: Judge
A Supreme Court judge says she blocked the Nine Network's 60 Minutes from screening
a controversial segment about teen suicides because of concerns over copycat suicides.
The national anti-depression initiative beyondblue won a last-minute injunction last
Sunday to stop the program broadcasting the story about the suicides of four students
at a Geelong school.
Justice ELIZABETH HOLLINGWORTH says she considered evidence .. including that from
a psychologist .. the program could have created a risk of copycat suicides among vulnerable
young people .. especially ones linked to the school in question.
Health experts and the Victorian Department of Education will now view the footage
before another court hearing next Friday.
The Nine Network has agreed not to screen the segment before then.

Safe House.(online data storage services)
DIGITAL EDGE: ONLINE DATA STORAGE AIN'T FREE ANYMORE, BUT YOUR COMPANY STILL NEEDS IT.
FREE? You WANT FREE ONLINE STORAGE? Of course you do. We've all been taught to regard free Internet this and that as our right. (The only cure for that line of thinking seems to be to start your own Web business.)
But, like so many other dotcoms, online storage providers are learning they can't rely on Web ads or relationshipmarketing newsletters to cover their costs. When Net advertising waned earlier this year, online storage companies' free users suddenly turned from assets into overhead. In dotcom parlance, they couldn't be "monetized."
Netdrive.com, which once provided 100MB of free storage, has quit providing. Ditto for Myspace.com, whose 7.6 million customers could once get up to 300MB free. High-profile Drive way, once a partner to MSN, has discontinued its end-user storage services. The best it hopes to do now is sell its storage platform to other Web sites.
The air hasn't gone out of the market, though: Survivors are scrambling to find new revenue models. Likely, they'll stumble on a combination of end-user subscriptions and software sales. New market entrant Everything Backup never even considered offering its services for free, says president and CEO David Roekle; and Xdrive and My Docs Online now charge for storage they previously gave away. Only FreeDrive still offers free storage (cut back from 50MB to 20MB), and it's making every effort to sell subscriptions.
The problem is that even though users are quick to sign up for anything that's free, that doesn't mean they'll use it regularly--much less respond to marketing e-mails or ads. So who are the most active online storage users and the most willing to pay for subscription-based service upgrades? Businesspeople. That's why so many sites are recasting their services with higher security, wireless data access and other extras that appeal to entrepreneurs.
Why bother with online data storage? Two words should suffice: rolling blackouts. Today California, tomorrow all the rest of the power grid. Why not just back up at your worksite? Sure, but where do you store the tapes and disks? Close to the PC or server being backed up? Lightning, flood, earthquake, tornado, fire and burglary all threaten them.
Security experts have always insisted you should back up data off-site. And once a file is online, it's easier for you to access from home or the road, share it with remote coworkers or use it to populate your company's Web site. A few providers even let you use mobile phones to access data or forward it to PCs and fax machines.
The provider you choose should have backup power, mainframe-quality environmental controls, rigorous security and, of course, a system of backups for your backups. All the companies below (and in the box above) do.
Who's Who of Who's Left
Nothing separates the looky-loos from the serious customers like asking them to pay. Phil Ressler, Xdrive's senior vice president of marketing, expects to lose 90 percent of his 9.5 million customers as a result of his company's new $4.95 monthly minimum. But he figures he needs less than 20,000 users to make it a go, and he's already converted more than 95,000 to paying customers.
To further its professional appeal, Xdrive has upgraded its software platform to provide faster transfer speeds, heightened security, peer-to-peer file sharing and tech support. Through Xdrive, you can send files as e-mail attachments using any Web-enabled device, including mobile phones.
The company has also struck a deal with Microsoft so that its site is one of the options for storing Web pages online offered by the Web Publishing Wizard of Windows XP.
Partnerships like that can help companies attract customers in bulk That's how My Docs Online of Naples, Florida, gets most of its subscribers. Bell Mobility and Nextel customers use My Docs' service to receive, view and forward files as e-mail attachments using Web-enabled devices.
My Docs never bought into the adsupported model. Except for a few thousand Beta testers, individual subscriptions start at $34.95 per year for 50MB.
Although FreeDrive still offers a free 20MB "Test Drive," try to find out about it from the company's Web site. Arguably the largest storage provider, with 15.5 million subscribers, FreeDrive would rather you upgrade to at least a $4.95 monthly subscription.
FreeDrive president and COO Dave Falter says about 30 percent of his 2 million business users have followed suit--that's 30 times the rate of consumer upgrades.
FreeDrive subscribers enjoy online chat, private and public file sharing, Web page clipping and access to files from Palm handhelds. Companies can negotiate prices for storage in 1GB increments.
The best prices for large amounts of storage can be found at Everything Backup, which sidestepped the temptation to provide free storage. The still-small company's subscriptions start at $34.95 per month for 1GB of space.
Like most of the other providers, Everything Backup downloads an application to your desktop that you can use to map your drives. Everything Backup's software icon also lets you schedule automated backups of single files, directories or entire drives.
Online storage will never replace your local hard drive, but it's a necessary adjunct. And if you're storing sensitive data online, shouldn't it be in a secure facility whose operator has some chance of being there tomorrow?
MIKE HOGAN is Entrepreneur's technology editor.
Room to Let BACK IT UP. DOWNLOAD IT. THEY'LL TAKE CARE OF THE REST.
